LA CRESCENTA : Boy Dies Hours After Being Struck in Head by Baseball

A 9-year-old La Crescenta boy--who played three more innings after being struck in the head with a baseball--collapsed and died several hours after the game, officials said Thursday.

An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of Timothy Richard Herman’s death.

Sheriff’s Lt. Ralph Martin, a friend of the family and a baseball manager in the Crescenta Sports Assn. league for the past 11 years, said the boy’s parents, Robert and Karen Herman, doubted that the impact of the ball caused Timothy’s death.

Officials said Timothy was wearing a batting helmet when he was struck in the head by a pitched ball Wednesday evening.

“It glanced off his helmet,” Martin said. “He hardly felt it. He ran to first base, and then pitched three more innings.”

About three hours later, Timothy complained of a pain in his right leg and then collapsed, officials said. They said he was rushed to Verdugo Hills Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 11:45 p.m.
