THOUSAND OAKS : Line of Quarters to Be Given to Hospice

Share

The Oaks mall, freshly spruced up with purple and green accents, will feature a shiny new decoration Saturday: a line of quarters placed side by side down the middle of the shopping center.

Each quarter placed on the line of sticky tape will be donated to Hospice of the Conejo, a nonprofit organization providing support to terminally ill patients and their families.

Organizers hope to raise $7,500 in the Fill the Gap fund-raising campaign to cover a shortfall in the hospice’s $145,000 annual budget. The group gets about 14% of its budget from United Way and raises the rest through donations.

To attract pocket change in Saturday’s quest for coins, organizers will offer prizes to donors who plunk down a quarter on predetermined, but secret locations along the line. Visitors to the Thousand Oaks mall will also get a chance to guess the length of the line and the number of quarters it will hold.

Donors need not bring their own change--dozens of hospice volunteers will carry around $5,000 worth of quarters to swap for dollar bills or checks.

“We’ve never done anything like this before, and it’s going to be fun,” said Jean Heister, hospice volunteer coordinator.

Run mainly by volunteers, Hospice of the Conejo has served up to 80 families a year for 18 years. The group was honored with a Thousand Oaks City Council commendation this week.
