SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The county’s first telecommuting work center is scheduled to open here by the end of May, city officials say.

The new facility would give county residents with lengthy commutes the option of working from the center instead of driving to their places of employment.

It will be equipped with 20 workstations and will feature facsimile machines, a copy center, computer labs, a conference room and two-way video telephones. It was planned by the city with public grants and there will be a monthly charge to users.

“The tele-center will allow people to commute via the electronic highway instead of a congested freeway,” said Kathleen Reavis of the city’s Public Works Department.

The City Council approved the plans for the Downtown Anaheim Telecenter Agreement on Tuesday night. The facility will be in the Kraemer Building, 201 Center St.

The city received two grants totaling $212,000 from UC Davis and the South Coast Air Quality Management District to develop the project.

URO Investments, an Irvine property management company, will operate the center. The city, the Redevelopment Agency and the Irvine firm will jointly market the center.
