Irish novelist Roddy Doyle seems surprised “that Hollywood always underestimates the audience’s intelligence” (“He Talks the Talk--Gaelic, That Is,” March 23). Perhaps he is not familiar with the statement attributed to H. L. Mencken that “no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence (or taste) of the American people.”
