PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Gutierrez’s Grand Slam Helps Canyon Knock Off Orange
Josh Gutierrez hit a grand slam and run-scoring single to pace Canyon to a 6-3 Century League baseball victory over visiting Orange Tuesday.
Gutierrez, filling in at first base for the injured Todd Wyatt, gave the Comanches a 4-0 lead in the first inning with his home run. Darren Chandler and Casey Wilson walked and Eric Valent singled to load the bases with no outs when Gutierrez came to bat.
Gutierrez, who fractured a finger while catching in the first inning in Canyon’s 15-14 loss to Orange on March 22 and missed two weeks, singled in Valent in the third to give Canyon a 5-0 lead.
Orange (11-7, 4-4 in league) scored two in the fourth on a double by Sean Simpson, an infield single by Marshall Maresh and Eric Mendoza’s single.
Canyon (13-4, 6-1) added a run in the sixth when Wilson doubled home Scott Redfox. Art Bell scored for Orange on a balk in the seventh.
Gunner Strunz (4-2) picked up the victory despite allowing at least one runner in each inning.
