The Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority has elected a seven-member finance committee to oversee funding of the $2-billion commerce superhighway.

The committee will be headed by Los Angeles City Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr., who represents San Pedro.

The other members are Long Beach City Councilman Jeffrey A. Kellogg; Carson Mayor Michael I. Mitoma; Los Angeles County representative Burke Roche; Caltrans representative Jerry Baxter; Steve Dillenbeck of the Port of Long Beach, and Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles Ezunial Burts.

The Alameda Corridor Project, expected to be completed by 2000, will run from the Port of Los Angeles to shipping centers on the city’s Eastside.

It will divert heavy trucks and train traffic carrying ship cargo away from burdened freeways onto a designated six-lane highway and railway line.

The project is expected to immediately create more than 10,000 construction jobs.

“The economic impact of the Alameda Corridor to the local economy, the harbor area, and to the rest of our nation will be tremendous,” Svorinich said.

The first $107 million for construction is expected from the federal government in the next fiscal budget.
