Pop Album Chart : Floyd’s ‘Bell’ Rings in Another No. 1

Share

Pink Floyd’s album “The Division Bell” may have a longer Top 10 life than some detractors expected. In its second week on the chart, “Bell” continues to toll at No. 1. The thinking was that the veteran group couldn’t attract enough young record buyers to keep the album among the bestsellers. But the excitement surrounding the group’s tour has been a big sales boost.

Tim McGraw’s “Not a Moment Too Soon” can’t slip down the chart a moment too soon for the Native Americans who have criticized “Indian Outlaw,” the hit single that’s driving album sales. But the album is going in the other direction, climbing three notches to No. 4. Imagine all the furor that will be generated if it becomes the nation’s No. 1 album--which isn’t out of the question. All-4-One’s first album, “All-4-One,” entered at No. 44--all on the strength of the group’s hit ballad single “So Much in Love.” R. Kelly’s “Bump ‘n’ Grind” is still the No. 1 pop single.

* The album by Hole, Courtney Love’s group, entered the chart at No. 55, somewhat lower than expected given all the publicity surrounding both the death of her husband, Kurt Cobain, and her own drug problems. It doesn’t help, though, that this isn’t a radio-friendly album. But that publicity, as well as positive reviews, may still generate good word of mouth, which could help keep the album going.
