COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Naster Pitches No-Hitter for Moorpark, 8-0

Jeff Naster pitched a no-hitter in Moorpark College’s 8-0 victory over Oxnard in a Western State Conference game Thursday at Moorpark.

Naster, a sophomore right-hander from Thousand Oaks High, took a perfect game into the sixth inning before issuing one of his three walks. He struck out five.

The no-hitter was saved in the seventh by shortstop Ryan Briggs, who made a nice play on a ground ball behind second base. Briggs also had three hits and four runs batted in.

Naster (7-2) pitched for the 1992 Newbury Oaks American Legion team, pitching a shutout in the World Series final.

Kevin Nykoluk hit his fifth home run to highlight a six-run second inning.

Wayne Northern added two doubles for the Raiders (16-14-2, 9-7-1 in conference play).

Bakersfield 17, Glendale 7--The Vaqueros (10-18-1, 8-10-1) walked 19 batters and hit four, leading to 10 runs in a WSC game at Glendale.

Ed Gillis led Bakersfield with three hits and two RBIs. Nate Baez, Rob Turner and Randy Vickers had two hits apiece for Glendale.

Santa Monica 5, Pierce 2--Robert Brennan scattered seven hits as Santa Monica upset Pierce in a WSC game. Robert Cox of Santa Monica hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to break open a scoreless game. After Pierce scored one run in the seventh, Santa Monica responded with three runs in the eighth.

The loss dropped Pierce into a first place tie with Bakersfield with 12-7 conference records.

Valley 13, Canyons 11--Will Skett was four for five with a home run, three RBIs and four runs, leading the Monarchs (12-16-1, 10-9) in a WSC game at Valencia. Skett has hit safely in 10 of 13 at-bats.

Ozzie Areu was three for three with three RBIs for Valley. Jorge Dorado’s two-run single in the fifth inning capped Valley’s comeback from an 8-2 deficit. Kevin Szymanski picked up the victory and Juan Velazquez recorded his first save.

Antelope Valley 9, Mt. San Jacinto 3--Eric Cole was two for three with a run and an RBI, leading the Marauders (13-14, 7-11) in a Foothill Conference game at Hemet.

Jack Cox homered and Will Wallace had two RBIs. Earlier, the Marauders played the final three innings of a 21-10 victory against Mt. San Jacinto. That game was suspended March 3.

Biola 5, The Master’s 0--Brian Schmidt pitched a complete game for Biola in a NAIA District III game at La Mirada. Curtis Marsh broke open a scoreless game in the sixth inning with a run-scoring single.
