Street Scene, a two-day family art festival, will take place at Cal State Fullerton today and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The free event, part of countywide Imagination Celebration activities, will feature about 90 amateur and professional chalk artists who will create works in Parking Lot D, outside the Visual Arts building.

“This is a great family event because it appeals to little children and grandparents and everyone in between,” said Lee Carlson, spokeswoman for the Art Alliance, a fund-raising organization for the university’s art department.

The chalk artists will try to re-create the International Street Painting Festival, which takes place annually in Italy. Chalk art was popularized during the 16th Century, when artists transformed pavements into colorful canvases during religious celebrations.

Strolling singers and Cal State Fullerton’s Jazz Ensemble will perform both days. Dancers will also entertain visitors, and student artists will present weaving, pottery and T-shirt spraying demonstrations while a Vietnamese-American contemporary art exhibit will be on display in the Main Gallery. More than 3,000 people are expected to attend.

For $10, children can buy colored chalk to use for their own creations, Carlson said. Proceeds from the events, food sales and sponsorships will raise money for scholarships for art students and to support the gallery.
