Clobert B. Broussard; St. Louis’ First Black Alderman

Clobert B. Broussard, 94, St. Louis’ first black alderman, who was active in the Agency on Aging during his retirement in Santa Barbara. Born to an illiterate sharecropper family in Avery Island, La., Broussard graduated from the University of Chicago and earned a master’s degree at Northwestern University. In 1948 he became the first black president of the St. Louis Urban League. He spent most of his career as a teacher and principal in St. Louis schools. After his retirement from the school system in 1969, he became the first black elected to the city’s Board of Aldermen. Retiring to Santa Barbara in 1981, Broussard served as the senior citizens’ liaison to the Santa Barbara City Council and was on the executive committee of the Tri-County Area Agency on Aging. On April 17 in Culver City of prostate cancer.
