Beach Party Train Tops Expectations

Metrolink train service to Ventura’s California Beach Party surpassed the city’s expectations, transporting more than 2,000 of the 24,000 who came to the two-day weekend event, a city spokeswoman said Monday.

The city had expected about 1,500 train riders, but 2,041 people arrived by Metrolink, said Debbie Solomon, a supervisor for Ventura’s community services office.

“We were rather impressed with the results,” she said. “We hope to do it again next year.”

The weekend’s ninth annual Beach Party marked the first time that Metrolink train service was available. Last year, about 26,000 attended.

Despite the high ridership, the city lost about $4,000 on its $9,000 investment to bring Metrolink to the annual beachfront event. Some of the loss was attributed to passes purchased in advance by regular riders, Solomon said.

“If the weather had been better on Sunday, we would have covered our costs,” she said.

The train made stops in Moorpark, Simi Valley, Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura.
