A wayward storm system brought traffic to a standstill on Valley freeways Monday, causing delays and more than 70 traffic accidents in the Antelope, San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, authorities said.

An unidentified 50-year-old Agua Dulce woman was killed on Vasquez Canyon Road when her car skidded off the twisting mountain road and plunged 350 feet down a steep embankment, said California Highway Patrol Officer Bill Granados.

At this time of year, storm systems usually don’t dip so far south, said Curtis Brack, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which provides weather information to The Times. In all, he said, about a third of an inch of rain fell in Woodland Hills.

Brack said his firm predicts another half inch of rain today from the tail end of this storm system, and then widely scattered showers Wednesday due to upper atmosphere turbulence.
