Mike Eastwood, playing because of an injury to Doug Gilmour, made the most of an opportunity.

Eastwood scored the game’s only goal with 13 seconds left in a third-period power play, giving the Toronto Maple Leafs a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Toronto and a 3-2 lead in their Western Conference quarterfinal playoff series.

“It’s a tremendous relief,” Eastwood said of his first playoff goal, scored at 10:07 of the third period. “I was just happy to be in the right place at the right time.”

Toronto’s opportunity came when Gary Suter was penalized for hooking at 8:20. Dave Andreychuk passed out of the corner to Eastwood, who put it over Ed Belfour’s shoulder.

“Wendel (Clark) made a great play behind the net to get the puck over to Dave and I just got a piece of it.”

Vancouver 2, Calgary 1--Geoff Courtnall’s goal 7:15 into overtime at Calgary kept the Canucks alive in the playoffs, cutting their deficit to 3-2 in a Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Calgary could have closed out the series by winning on its home ice, but instead Vancouver won the right to play host to Game 6 on Thursday night at Vancouver.

The game turned on a defensive mistake. Calgary’s Kevin Dahl was unable to control a bouncing puck near center ice and Courtnall took over. He broke in alone and scored on a 35-foot slap shot.

San Jose 6, Detroit 4--Sergei Makarov scored twice and Igor Larionov had three assists at San Jose to help the eighth-seeded Sharks take a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Makarov scored the Sharks’ first goal on a power play 2:47 into the game. After another first-period goal by Todd Elik, Detroit rallied to tie the score on goals by Paul Coffey and Ray Sheppard.

Makarov scored his second goal with only 75 seconds to play in the second period, putting the Sharks ahead to stay. San Jose was outshot, 35-21, but Arturs Irbe stopped 31 shots.
