Lion’s Share of L.A. Emmy Nods to KCAL

KCAL-TV Channel 9 dominated nominations for the 46th annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, accounting for 25% of the 225 finalists announced Thursday.

KCAL’s 56 nominations included best daytime newscast, best news reporting, best spot news and best news commentary.

Winners of the awards, covering programming broadcast in 1993, will be announced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in ceremonies June 4 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Trailing KCAL on the Emmy nomination tote board were KABC-TV Channel 7 with 33, KTTV-TV Channel 11 with 29, KCBS-TV Channel 2 with 26, KCOP-TV Channel 13 and KTLA-TV Channel 5 with 17 each, and KCET-TV Channel 28 with 15.

The remainder of the nominations were spread among KNBC-TV Channel 4 with nine, KMEX-TV Channel 34 with six, KVEA-TV Channel 52 with four, KLCS-TV Channel 58 and CITY TV with three each, KOCE-TV Channel 50 and KPAS 55 with two apiece, and KDOC-TV Channel 56, Channel 35 and Lakewood Cable with one each.

Reporters Harvey Levin of KCBS and Chris Blatchford of KTTV garnered four nominations each, for news reporting, investigative reporting, serious news-feature reporting and serious minidoc.

The TV academy said nominations for the category of best 60-minute newscast will be announced in several weeks, blaming scheduling requirements for the delay.

* Live coverage of an unscheduled news event: “Fire Coverage,” KTTV; “Laguna Fire,” KABC; “Malibu Fire Coverage,” KTLA; “Malibu-Topanga Fire,” KCBS; “Southland on Fire,” KCAL.

* Informational/public-affairs series (remote): “City View,” KABC; “Life & Times,” KCET.
