Activities Planned for Cinco de Mayo

Several events are planned in the San Fernando Valley to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, commemorating the Battle of Puebla in which ragtag Mexican warriors defeated the French army May 5, 1862. Among the offerings:

Montezuma visit: A celebration with Montezuma, the last Aztec emperor of Mexico (portrayed by Fabian Gregory Cordova), will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today and Thursday at the outdoor Plaza of Mexican Heritage at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Hollywood Hills. Celebration: Mission College will hold a program at noon Thursday in Campus Center Room 1 with speakers, food, music by students and dances by children. The college is at 13356 Eldridge Ave., Sylmar. Free. Information: (818) 364-7766.

Evening event: A Cinco de Mayo celebration with music and dancers will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Valley College’s Monarch Hall, 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys. Free. Information: (818) 781-1200.

San Fernando Mall: A sidewalk sale for Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day will be held along San Fernando Road between San Fernando Mission Boulevard and Chatsworth Street from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
