A man who was skating across Newhope Street was killed Monday night when he was struck by a car, police said.

The victim, Julian Mar Cervantes, 21, was skating in a crosswalk at the intersection of Newhope and McFadden Avenue, a block from his home, when the accident occurred just after 8 p.m., said Lt. Robert Helton.

The driver, an 18-year-old Fountain Valley man, continued northbound on Newhope after the collision and crashed into a telephone pole. He suffered minor injuries.

“The driver was in the left lane, then changed lanes when the traffic in front of him stopped, and that’s when he struck the pedestrian who was in the crosswalk,” Helton said.

The driver of the car was not cited at the scene but the accident remains under investigation to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
