OXNARD : 2nd Man Charged in ’92 Rape-Slaying

A second man has been charged in connection with a 2-year-old Oxnard murder in which the first defendant has been sentenced to die in the gas chamber, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Frederick Lee Jackson, 26, faces charges of murder, rape and kidnaping in the Jan. 26, 1992, slaying of 30-year-old Genoveva Gonzales, a mother of four.

The murder charge against Jackson includes a special allegation that Gonzales was shot while being kidnaped and raped. If convicted of the special allegation, Jackson could be sent to the gas chamber.

Christopher James Sattiewhite, 24, was sentenced April 25 to die in the gas chamber for his role in Gonzales’ death. A jury convicted him of the same charges that Jackson faces.

However, prosecutors acknowledge that their case against Sattiewhite was stronger than the case against Jackson. Sattiewhite admitted to being the triggerman.

Other than that fact, “95% of the evidence is the same,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Donald C. Glynn said.

Glynn said a decision on whether to seek the death penalty against Jackson will not be made for at least a month. Jackson is serving a 28-year sentence in an unrelated rape case.
