Boris Becker’s comeback was dealt another blow Thursday when Alex Corretja defeated the seventh-seeded three-time Wimbledon winner, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5, in a second-round match at the German Open on clay at Hamburg.

Becker joined Stefan Edberg and Goran Ivanisevic as upset victims in the second round. Jaime Yzaga defeated second-seeded Edberg, 6-4, 7-5, and Yevgeni Kafelnikov shocked third-seeded Ivanisevic, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0. Javier Sanchez knocked off eighth-seeded Petr Korda, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.

Top-seeded Todd Martin breezed past Christian Bergstrom, 6-1, 6-1, becoming the only seeded player to win a match at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Clay Court Classic at Pinehurst, N.C.

Second-seeded MaliVai Washington, No. 4 Richey Reneberg and No. 6 Luiz Mattar of Brazil were ousted on courts slowed by rain.

Washington was eliminated by Jared Palmer, 6-2, 6-1; Reneberg fell to Franco Davin, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, and Mattar lost to Mark Woodforde, 6-1, 6-1.

Adriana Serra-Zanetti, a qualifier, ousted 10th-seeded Brenda Schultz, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals of the Italian Open in Rome. Serra-Zanetti will be joined by second-seeded Martina Navratilova, who defeated Ines Gorrochategui, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

Basketball

Tim Floyd, the University of New Orleans basketball coach who had turned down the job at Iowa State, changed his mind and will become coach of the Cyclones.

Chris Webber of the Golden State Warriors and Anfernee Hardaway of the Orlando Magic were unanimous choices for the NBA’s all-rookie team. They were joined on the first team by Vin Baker of the Milwaukee Bucks, Jamal Mashburn of the Dallas Mavericks and Isaiah Rider of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Nick Van Exel of the Lakers made the second team.

Football

Earnest Byner, 31, signed a contract to return to the Cleveland Browns after five seasons and a Super Bowl victory with the Washington Redskins. . . . Lem Barney, a Hall of Fame defensive back for the Detroit Lions, was acquitted of drunk driving and possession of cocaine and marijuana. . . . Former Dallas account clerk Candace Pratt pleaded not guilty to charges that she defrauded almost $1 million from Cowboy owner Jerry Jones in 1993. . . . The New York Jets signed Jack Trudeau as a backup quarterback.

Hockey

Shayne Corson of the Edmonton Oilers scored the winning goal as Canada defeated the Czech Republic, 3-2, and advanced to a semifinal game against Sweden in the World Hockey Championships at Milan, Italy.

The other semifinal on Saturday will pit the United States against Finland, a 10-0 winner over Austria. Finland defeated the United States in their first meeting, 7-2.

Pittsburgh Penguin defenseman Peter Taglianetti, goalie Tom Barrasso and strength coach John Walday were arraigned on charges stemming from a barroom fight at an end-of-season party. . . . Hartford Whaler defenseman Chris Pronger, 19, was sentenced to three days in jail and fined $483 for drunk driving in Ohio.

Miscellany

Random drug testing of public-school athletes was ruled unconstitutional by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, which was hearing a case involving an Oregon seventh-grader. . . . The father of Brazilian national soccer team forward Romario, Edevair Souza de Faria, has been kidnaped and $7 million in ransom is being demanded, police in Rio de Janeiro said. . . . Latvian cyclist Juris Silvos broke his cheek and suffered severe cuts to his face, arm and leg after running over a photographer in the first stage of the Tour DuPont bicycle race in Dover, Del. The first stage was won by Wiebren Veenstra of the Netherlands.

The 1994 Legends Cup, a professional arena polo game, will be played Saturday at 8:45 p.m. at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. . . . Herwig Demschar, head of the Austrian women’s ski team the last two seasons, was hired to succeed Paul Major as coach of the U.S. women’s team.
