The Boston Red Sox put pitcher Frank Viola on the 60-day disabled list after tests revealed he had damaged muscles on the inside of his left elbow and a partially torn ligament. . . . A day after an injury sidelined him for several days, Florida Marlin catcher Benito Santiago dropped his appeal of a four-game suspension and immediately began serving the penalty. Santiago was suspended on April 21 by National League President Len Coleman for charging pitcher Kevin Rogers and starting a bench-clearing brawl against the San Francisco Giants.
