PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Magnolia Takes Advantage of Errors to Upset Savanna

Magnolia took advantage of five Savanna errors to upset the first-place Rebels, 5-2, in an Orange League softball game Thursday at Magnolia.

Magnolia (10-7, 5-3 in league) also committed five errors, but they proved less costly. The Sentinels moved into a second-place tie with Western. Savanna (10-9, 6-2) remains in first.

The Sentinels scored three runs in the first, with one out. Barbara Carlson tripled to drive in Shannon Carlson and scored when Sophia Garcia reached first on a throwing error by third baseman Crystal Zaleski.

Savanna’s Larina Baker started the third inning with a line drive to left that fell in for a single and rolled away from left fielder Maria Levario for a two-base error. Pitcher Tiffany Mercado struck out the next batter, but Chrissy Vega singled Baker home.

In the sixth, Savanna Coach Bob Aguilera was ejected for arguing a call from the previous inning. His team then loaded the bases with two outs but Baker grounded out.

Magnolia took a 5-1 lead with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Nicole Faircloth reached on an error, moved to second on a single by Nadine Hart and scored when third baseman Zaleski committed an error on Maria Levario’s grounder to third. Hart attempted to capitalize on the error but was thrown out at home for the second out. Levario took third on the throw and scored on Mercado’s single.

Savanna scored one in the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs, but Zaleski fouled out.
