PREP ROUNDUP : Nista Sets County Record for Hits

Laguna Hills’ Brett Nista set an Orange County record for career hits Saturday as the Hawks swept a nonleague doubleheader from host Aliso Niguel, 9-2 and 10-1.

Nista, who passed Shawn Green’s mark of 147 hits in the second inning of the second game with a triple, had four hits to reach 149. Green, the Tustin graduate playing in the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization, set the record in 1991.

Nista, a senior shortstop, had one hit in the first game and three in the second game. Nista, a four-year letterman, has signed a letter of intent with UCLA.

Ron DeVito led Laguna Hills (12-11) in the first game with two hits, including a home run and five runs batted in.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 9, Cypress 1--Esperanza (12-11, 7-6) scored seven runs in the fourth inning to seal the victory. The game, which was suspended Friday because of rain, was resumed Saturday in the fourth inning.

Bryan Bingham and Jeff Roth each had three hits for Esperanza, and Chris Stretch had two hits, including a double and two RBIs.

Katella 3, Los Alamitos 2--Mike Villegas’ two-run single in the third inning tied the score for Katella (15-8-1, 9-4), and Drake Gustafson followed with the go-ahead RBI single in the fourth inning. Gustafson finished with three hits.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 9, Huntington Beach 3--Brad Churchill had three hits and Kevin Johnson hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead the Seahawks (13-10, 6-6).

Starting pitcher Pat Gildea earned the victory, pitching five innings for Ocean View. Jim Brewer, top pitcher for the Oilers (16-8, 7-5), gave up five runs in the first inning.

In Century League tennis:

Canyon 12 2/3, Orange 8 1/3--Canyon’s No. 2 doubles team of Warren Wang and Andy Chou rallied to win the first set and later the third set to clinch third place for Canyon in the Century League. Canyon (14-5, 7-4) was playing Orange (13-5, 6-5) in a replay of Friday’s match, which was rained out.

In Pacific Coast League boys’ track and field finals:

Century boys win--Jalani Freeman won the 100 in 11.29 and took second in the 200 (22.53) for Century.

Jessie McDonald of Laguna Hills was the only double winner, taking the shotput (49-2) and discus (151-8).

Team scores were: Century 215, Laguna Hills 111, Trabuco Hills 70, Estancia 62, Costa Mesa 23 and Laguna Beach 13.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ track and field finals:

Laguna Hills girls win--Tiffany Boykin won the 400 (58.43) and 800 (2:26.43) to help Laguna Hills finish first. Katie Okono of Trabuco Hills was a double winner, taking first in the shotput (31-3) and discus (115-1 1/2). Team scores were: Laguna Hills 170, Trabuco Hills 151, Estancia 61, Century 42, Costa Mesa 27 and Laguna Beach 10.
