BRIEFLY : Charity: Activist Brand to Be Honored

Sybil Brand, widely known for her efforts to improve conditions for women and juvenile prisoners, will be honored at a luncheon May 15 at the

Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood.

Brand, who turns 92 today, is slated to receive a humanitarian award from the Los Angeles branch of the Women’s American ORT, a nonprofit organization that supports vocational and technical training around the world.

Admission to the luncheon is $50. The proceeds will be used to establish a Sybil Brand Scholarship Fund at the Los Angeles ORT Technical Institute. Information: (213) 655-2911 or (310) 556-1466.

Education: Open Enrollment Offered

Santa Monica/Malibu Unified School District has implemented an open enrollment policy for the first time. Until May 25, parents who live in the district can apply to enroll their child in any school in the district.

Approval will be subject to available space and the district’s ethnic guidelines. A ratio of 70% whites to 30% minority students constitutes a racially balanced district. Also, families who live within the neighborhood boundaries of a particular school will be given preference to enroll at that school.

Business: Seminar on Workers’ Comp

A Santa Monica insurance brokerage firm is offering a free seminar Monday featuring specialists in the managed-care approach to workers’ compensation.

Andreini & Co. invites representatives from area businesses to attend. The seminar is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the Doubletree Hotel, 1401 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey. Presenters will include representatives of Blue Cross, FHP/Great States and Foundation Health.
