A LOSS OF THEIR OWN: The all-woman Colorado Silver Bullets bombed in their first game Sunday against a professional men’s team. The final was 19-0. In some leagues, the game would have been called. . . . But there was some good news for ex-Cal State Northridge softball star Michele McAnany. She got one of her team’s only two hits.

CHANGING CAMPUS: For the second year in a row, Anglo students at CSUN--classified as white, non-Hispanics--make up the largest minority on campus, 47.7%, down from 49.2% last fall. . . . “We’re just reflecting the community we’re designed to serve,” a school official said of the growing diversity in recent years.

FLYING HIGH: Business these days is booming at Burbank Airport, and much of the credit must go to Southwest Airlines (above), which accounts for two of every three passengers (Valley Business, Page 12). . . . Before Southwest arrived in 1990, 3,700 people flew each week between Burbank and Oakland, spending an average of $204. Now, 16,000 take the same trip, and it only costs half that much.

LOWER HOME PRICES: The good news for home sellers is that properties are selling like hot cakes. The bad news is that the homes are going for low prices. Last month, though the busiest April in five years for Valley real estate, also was the worst April in seven years for prices. . . . “It is still very much a buyer’s market,” said one expert. See Valley Business, Page 9.

CLEARING THE AIR: The great smoking battle resumes tonight in Santa Clarita. The big question is what kind of ban, if any, will the City Council impose on local restaurants and businesses. . . . The council had initially proposed a ban five months ago but then decided to hold additional public hearings before taking final action (B7).
