Tarkanian Turns Down Aztec Job
Jerry Tarkanian, former Nevada Las Vegas basketball coach, said Tuesday that he turned down the San Diego State job last weekend.
“The program is down, but I think we could build it up,” he said. “That wasn’t the problem. I was excited Saturday . . . but I just didn’t feel it was the right time for me.”
The Aztecs, who finished 12-16 overall (6-12 in the Western Athletic Conference), are in search of a replacement for Tony Fuller, who returned to his alma mater, Pepperdine, after two seasons at San Diego State.
Among the possible successors: Tim Grgurich, a former UNLV assistant coach who is on the Seattle SuperSonics’ staff.
Tarkanian said he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a return to college coaching.
