Shotputter Brian Tade of El Camino Real High and middle distance runner Emani Barfield of Alameda High have signed letters of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Tade (6-foot-4, 270 pounds) placed third in the shotput in last year’s City Section championships during his first season and he leads the region with a personal best of 57 feet 7 1/2 inches this year.

Tade, a tackle in football, plans to concentrate on track at Northridge, where he is expected to also compete in the discus and hammer throw. “This has been overwhelming,” Tade said. “I went out for track last year just to have some fun and it ends up getting me a college scholarship.”

Barfield has personal bests of 2 minutes 21 seconds in the 800 and 5:13 in the 1,600.
