Peter G. Angelos, majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles, was in Los Angeles to meet with Ram officials about the possibility of moving the NFL team to Maryland.

None of the parties involved would comment about the meeting, but a source familiar with the situation said Angelos was here mostly to allow everyone involved to get acquainted. He was accompanied by Larry Lucchino, a member of his proposed NFL investment group who has met several times with Ram officials.

Deion Sanders, a former standout cornerback at Florida State, said he saw plenty of money being waved at players when he was in school and was not surprised at a magazine report that some Seminole players took such money.

The report said that at least seven players participated in a $6,000 shopping spree last fall, and six of them also received up to $10,000 from agents.

Sanders said agents were “pretty much everywhere” when he attended school in the late 1980s.

Charles Reed, chancellor of the state university system, said the investigation is continuing.

National champion Arkansas will be the only regional finalist from last year’s NCAA tournament not playing in a new tournament, the Great Eight, Nov. 29-30 at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Connecticut will take Arkansas’ place.

In something of a surprise, forward Gianfranco Zola was picked for Italy’s World Cup team over Roberto Mancini as Coach Arrigo Sacchi announced his roster.
