Sophia Waugh of Agua Dulce, a past member of the Antelope Valley Union High School District board of trustees, was sworn in Tuesday as the newest member of the Los Angeles County Board of Education.

Waugh, selected by Supervisor Mike Antonovich to serve on the seven-member board, was named to a two-year term. She replaces Barbara Pieper, a member of the county Office of Education board since 1990.

The county board is involved in curriculum development and research and deals with issues such as student expulsion appeals and school district unification. The Office of Education oversees and approves the budgets and financial transactions of the 95 school districts in the county.

Waugh, a longtime Agua Dulce resident, was at a board of education meeting Tuesday afternoon and could not be reached for comment.

In a statement released by Antonovich’s office, Waugh said in her new role she would put a priority on career/vocational education, as she did when she was a member of the high school district board.

“These types of programs reach all students and result in better student attendance and attitudes and lowers the dropout and expulsion rate,” Waugh said.

Waugh was elected to the high school board in 1989, but did not seek re-election when her four-year term expired last year.
