The Los Angeles Times recently won first place for General Excellence in the 1994 JCPenney-University of Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards, widely regarded as the most prestigious newspaper features prize.

In addition, Life & Style writer Roy Rivenburg won a first-place award in Fashion/Design for his Column One story, “The New Wrinkle of Polyester” about the comeback of “America’s most frightening fabric.”

In selecting The Times for this award in Class V, the largest-circulation category, one of the judges said several of the contenders were excellent.

“However, the Los Angeles Times stood out in this category because of the consistently high quality throughout its entry,” said the judge, John Ginn, the Knight Professor of Journalism at the University of Kansas. “All of the reporting was thorough. The writing was energetic.” He also cited the overall quality of the newspaper’s layouts.

The nine sections included in the judging were View (now Life & Style), Calendar, Sunday Calendar, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, TV Times, Real Estate, Travel, Food and the Book Review.

General Excellence Awards include $1,000 and a trophy for first place.
