Profile of Infected Donor

from Associated Press

The donor who provided sperm--and the HIV virus--to Mary Orsak and Cynthia Hallvik was a third-year undergraduate student at UCLA who belonged to the Geography Club and the Thespian Drama Society.

The questionnaire he completed for the Tyler Medical Clinic, which was obtained by the Associated Press, said he was 5-foot-11, weighed 150 pounds and had thick blond hair and blue eyes. His name and age were omitted because of patient-confidentiality laws.

The donor, who listed his health as “good,” first began donating semen in 1981. He could not have known then that he was carrying the virus; the HIV test was not available until 1985.

Attorneys for the Orsaks and Hallviks said the young man died last year in his hometown of Boise, Idaho.

According to the two women, the clinic said many of its donors were intelligent students from nearby UCLA. At that time, donors received about $20 per visit.

The questionnaire asked a lengthy series of questions concerning diseases such as German measles, mumps, influenza, gonorrhea and syphilis, but included no inquiries about sexual practices.
