Bob Boies, the principal of Columbus Tustin Middle School, has been appointed principal of Tustin High School. He will replace Duffy Clark, who will become principal of Mission Viejo High School.

Trustees of the Tustin Unified School District approved his appointment earlier this month. Boies, 52, will assume his new post on July 1.

School district officials said that a new principal at Columbus Tustin probably would be named by July. Applicants will be interviewed next month.

“I’ve always considered Tustin High School my home,” said Boies, who taught history and social science at the school from 1978 until 1986. “It’s a great high school and I’m excited to be back.”

From 1987 to 1990, Boies was the school’s activities director and assistant principal in charge of instruction, discipline and student services.

Boies started with the district as a fifth-grade intern teacher in 1964. He also taught at Columbus Tustin, A.G. Currie and Utt middle schools.

Four years ago, he was appointed principal of Columbus Tustin, where he succeeded in getting a state grant that paid for computers, video equipment, laser discs and other high-tech equipment for the school.

As part of the $100,000-a-year grant, Columbus Tustin was designated as a demonstration school in the state’s technology-in-education program.

Teachers from across the state learn during the summer how to use computers as teaching tools.

Boies has also formed partnerships with local businesses, including Dimension Cable, the local cable television company, which allows students to use its equipment to film school board meetings.

Last year, Columbus Tustin was selected as an outstanding school by the California League of Middle Schools.

Boies and his wife, Barbara, a teacher at A.G. Currie, live in Irvine.
