SANTA ANA : Man, 27, Killed in Apartment Blaze
A 27-year-old man was killed early Monday when fire swept his one-bedroom apartment in the 1400 block of North Broadway, fire officials said.
The man, who has not been identified, died of smoke inhalation, Fire Department spokesman Jim Livingston said.
The 1 a.m. fire appears to have started in a sofa and was caused by somebody smoking, he said. There were no smoke detectors or sprinklers in the duplex, located behind a business.
One of the 22 firefighters called to the scene suffered a minor hand injury in the 10 minutes it took to extinguish the blaze, Livingston said. The loss to property and contents was put at $85,000.
