Barry Bonds hit his 13th homer and John Burkett won for the first time in five starts as the San Francisco Giants won at San Diego, 5-2, Wednesday night, ending their season-high six-game losing streak.

Kirt Manwaring and Todd Benzinger had run-scoring doubles and John Patterson went three for four for the Giants, who began the game tied with San Diego for the worst batting average in the majors at .244.

Burkett (4-3) stopped a personal streak that included two losses and two no-decisions. He gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings. Rod Beck worked the ninth for his eighth save.

Three unearned runs in the third helped continue a streak of bad luck for Andy Ashby (0-5), winless in 12 starts since September.

Atlanta 6, Houston 5--Jeff Blauser doubled home the winning run with one out in the 13th inning after an Astro misplay, giving the Braves a victory in Atlanta.

Rafael Belliard singled with one out and Deion Sanders followed with a grounder to second baseman Chris Donnels. But shortstop Andujar Cedeno, trying to turn a double play, failed to tag second as he caught the throw from Donnels, and both runners were safe.

Blauser, who drove in two runs earlier, then hit his game-winning double.

Mike Bielecki (1-0), who hadn’t pitched in 11 days, earned the victory with three scoreless innings.

Montreal 3, Florida 1--Darrin Fletcher drove in two runs and Ken Hill got his eighth victory as the Expos beat the Marlins at Miami.

Hill (8-2) tied St. Louis’ Bob Tewksbury for the National League lead in victories. He left the bases loaded twice while giving up one run, five hits and a season-high three walks in seven innings.

John Wetteland pitched two scoreless innings for his fifth save.

Florida’s Gary Sheffield, activated from the disabled list before the game after recovering from a shoulder injury, went 0 for 4.

New York 6, Pittsburgh 3--Jose Vizcaino’s two-run single keyed the Mets’ second consecutive late-inning comeback at Pittsburgh for a victory that sent the Pirates to their 10th loss in 12 games.

Bret Saberhagen (5-2) kept the Pirates in their monthlong offensive slump by pitching five-hit ball in six innings before leaving with muscle spasms in his lower back.

The bullpen nearly blew his 4-1 lead as the Pirates scored twice in the seventh after a 1-hour 32-minute rain delay on Don Slaught’s run-scoring double and Tom Foley’s run-scoring single against Josias Manzanillo.

St. Louis 10, Philadelphia 5--Ray Lankford homered, doubled twice and drove in three runs as the Cardinals beat the Phillies at St. Louis.

Tom Pagnozzi homered and doubled and Mark Whiten also homered for St. Louis, which set a major league record Tuesday by stranding 16 runners in a shutout loss. The Cardinals took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the sixth and scored five more in the seventh.

Pete Incaviglia homered for the fourth time in four games for the Phillies, who were bidding to reach the .500 mark for the first time since April 21. Philadelphia lost for only the third time in 13 games.

Bryan Eversgerd (2-0) got the victory.

Colorado 3, Cincinnati 2--Andres Galarraga’s home run in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie at Denver, sending the Rockies to their third straight victory.

Galarraga’s 16th homer came off Jose Rijo (2-3), who failed in his third attempt to get the 100th victory of his career.

Mike Harkey (1-4) pitched two innings of two-hit relief for the victory. Bruce Ruffin finished up for his fourth save.

The Reds have lost five in a row, including the first three games of a seven-game trip.
