4th of July Fireworks Sale Is OK’d

Share

The City Council picked eight local nonprofit groups last week to sell fireworks for the 4th of July holiday. The council in April authorized the sale of state-approved fireworks after nonprofit groups said they want to use the sales to raise money.

The Orange County Fire Department, which provides fire protection to Stanton, opposed the move. Cities in California can approve the sale of certain approved fireworks, but many others remain illegal. A majority of the council members argued that illegal fireworks are the most risky and that those with state approval present an acceptable risk. The fireworks will be sold July 1 through 4.

The council decided to recover the full estimated cost of providing fire protection when the fireworks are sold, so each nonprofit group must pay a $1,051 fee. Only eight groups applied for permits. All were approved.

The groups are: American Legion Post 783, Boys & Girls Club of Stanton, Calvary Assembly of God, Calvary Assembly of God Royal Rangers, Kiwanis Club of Stanton, Knights of Columbus Council 6095, Stanton Little League and the Stanton Neighborhood Center.

In other action, the council approved a carnival on Beach Boulevard from June 16 through 19, to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club.
