South Bay residents donated more than 18,000 pounds of food during a recent drive by postal workers.

The drive was conducted by members of the National Assn. of Letter Carriers, who collected the food during their postal runs on May 14 in an effort to restock food banks in time for summer.

About 40 million pounds of food were donated nationwide, more than triple the amount collected in last year’s inaugural drive.

In Los Angeles County, the carriers collected 76,000 pounds of food. Los Angeles Regional Foodbank will distribute it to 750 local charities, spokeswoman Lorie Burstein said.

The charities help feed nearly 300,000 people a week, she said. South Bay beneficiaries include St. Lawrence Martyr Parish in Redondo Beach and the Asian Service Center in Gardena.

“We really appreciate them doing it at this time because it’s during the summer months that our donations drop off,” Burstein said.

The U.S. Postal Service plans to continue the drive every year in the second week of May, a spokeswoman said.
