Students and staff members at Thousand Oaks High School received a $1,000 check Friday from a high school in Garland, Tex., that sold spaghetti dinners to help victims of the Jan. 17 earthquake.

The donation, symbolized by an oversize check, was made during a year-end assembly at Thousand Oaks High School.

Officials from Garland were not present, but the ceremony was videotaped and will be sent to the school.

Thousand Oaks High School suffered mainly cosmetic damage during the earthquake.

Cracks in the sidewalk and plaster were evident, and one portable classroom sustained structural damage.

Lorraine Harrell, a spokeswoman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said state officials picked Thousand Oaks High to receive the donation from Texas because larger sums have already been funneled to more severely damaged high schools in the San Fernando Valley.

As a result of the donation, the high schools in Thousand Oaks and Garland plan to set up a sister-school relationship, said Supt. Jerry Gross of the Conejo Valley Unified School District.
