KCAL-TV Channel 9 was the big winner in the 46th annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, picking up 13 statuettes Saturday night--five more than its closest competitor. But it failed to capture the coveted award for best hourlong newscast.

Instead, in the equivalent of a movie winning the Oscar as best picture without collecting any honors for its writer, director or actors, KTTV-TV Channel 11’s “Fox News at Ten” was named the best 60-minute newscast on local television during 1993.

For the record:

More winners--An article Monday about the winners of Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards omitted the names of several KTLA-TV Channel 5 employees who contributed to the Malibu fire reporting that was named best live coverage of an unscheduled news event. Also sharing in the award were producer Christine Michie and reporters Carlos Amezcua, Barbara Beck, Jann Carl, Hal Fishman, Mark Kriski, Larry McCormick and Michele Ruiz.

The 10 p.m. KTTV newscast won only two other Emmys--both for camera work--while KCAL’s “Prime 9 News at 10” garnered seven, including best news reporting, best sports reporting, best commentary and best editing.

But KCAL’s “9 News at Noon” was named best daytime newscast, and the station’s prime-time special, “Sex and AIDS in Russia,” won two Emmys, for best program dealing with crime or a social issue, and for its host, Pat Harvey.

KNBC-TV Channel 4 got the Emmy for best 30-minute newscast for “Channel 4 News at 11.”

Besides the 13 Emmys for KCAL, KCBS-TV Channel 2 won eight, KABC-TV Channel 7 got six and KTTV, KTLA-TV Channel 5 and KCET-TV Channel 28 earned five each. KNBC and KCOP-TV Channel 13 each won three, while KMEX-TV Channel 34 and KLCS-TV Channel 58 collected two each, and cable programmers KPAS 55 and Channel 35 got one apiece.

KCBS’ Emmys included two to the team of reporter Harvey Levin and producer Ken Mate for best investigative reporting and best serious mini-documentary. The Channel 2 news department, which consistently trails KABC and KNBC in the ratings, also was honored for spot-news reporting, feature reporting and news writing.

Outside of news, KCET’s “Life & Times” and KABC’s “City View” were the most-honored series, picking up four Emmys each. But “Life & Times” beat “City View” for best informational/public affairs series shot outside a studio. “City View” won in that category last year.

The Governors Award, given to someone who has made a special contribution to Los Angeles-area television, went to Larry McCormick, a newsman at KTLA since 1971 who previously worked at KABC and KCOP. McCormick anchors the weekend news at Channel 5 and also was co-host of “Making It! Minority Success Stories,” which won the Emmy for best studio-based informational/public affairs series.

The awards were handed out by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in ceremonies at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
