Premieres Set for Chamber Series

Two world premieres and a Southern California premiere will highlight the 1994-95 chamber music series at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The series will consist of five concerts, one more than in past seasons.

New works by Stephen L. Mosko and by vibraphonist Lyle Mays, a jazz musician known for his membership in the Pat Metheny Group, will receive their first performances Oct. 22 and Nov. 10, respectively. Olivier Messiaen’s Piece for Piano and Strings will also be heard Oct. 22 for the first time in Southern California.

Groups performing in the series will include the Southwest Chamber Music Society and the Debussy Trio, both from Southern California; the Cherubini String Quartet from Germany; the Zurich-based Carmina Quartet, and the Santa Fe (N.M.) Chamber Music Festival on Tour.

All programs will begin at 8 p.m. in Founders Hall. Series tickets will go on sale on Aug. 8 at $90 ($40 for students). Tickets to individual concerts will go on sale six weeks prior to the concert at prices to be announced. Information: (714): 556-2787.

The Season

* Oct. 22: Southwest Chamber Music Society: Mosko’s “Psychotropics” for woodwind, string quartet and piano; Messiaen’s Piece for Piano and Strings and “La Merle Noir” for flute and piano, Bruckner’s Quintet in F.

* Nov. 10: Debussy Trio: Mays’ untitled work, composed for the Trio; Jan Bach’s “Eisteddfod” (Variations and Penillion on a Welsh harp tune); Debussy’s Trio No. 2; Ian Krouse’s “Dos Canciones Inolitas”; Fred Lerdalh’s “Imitations,” Sofia Gubaidulina’s “Garten von Freuden and Traurigkeiten,” with soprano Susan Alexander.

* Feb. 4: Cherubini String Quartet: a Beethoven program including String Quartet in C minor, Opus 18, No. 4; String Quartet in F, Opus 135, String Quartet in E minor, Opus 59, No. 2.

* March 23: Carmina String Quartet: Haydn’s Quartet in C, Opus 76, No. 5; Debussy’s Quartet in G minor, Schubert’s Quartet No. 15.

* April 27: Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival on Tour: Beethoven’s String Trio in G; Schuman’s Quartet in E-flat for Piano and Strings, Richard Danielpour’s Quintet for Piano and Strings.
