PREP GOLF : Hoffman, Lee Win CIF Titles
You’ll have to excuse Charley Hoffman if he wasn’t doing back flips after winning the CIF-Southern California Golf Assn. boys’ title Monday at Redlands Country Club.
Sure Hoffman, a junior at Poway High, had won the most important high school tournament in Southern California with a two-under-par 68, but he recently won his first title on the national junior circuit and said high school competition pales in comparison.
Jenny Lee, a junior from Fullerton Sunny Hills, won the girls’ title by one stroke, shooting one-over 74 to beat two-time defending champion Kellee Booth of Santa Margarita. Julie Oh of Torrance finished third at 76.
Hoffman finished three strokes ahead of Ryan King of Rancho Buena Vista High and Jeremy Whiting of Palm Desert. “A lot of people are going to see that I won,” Hoffman said. “This is a good tournament; a lot of good players are here.”
Two were absent. Southern Section champion Tiger Woods of Anaheim Western was playing a practice round for the Buick Open in New York and City champion Darren Angel of Granada Hills was at U.S. Open qualifying.
Hoffman also helped Poway to second place in the team competition. Poway, the San Diego Section runner-up, finished with 380 strokes, four behind Palm Desert, the Southern Section runner-up.
