Bill Shumard, who resigned as athletic director at Cal State Fullerton effective at the end of May, has bounced back quickly.

Long Beach State announced Friday that Shumard will be the school’s assistant athletic director for development and administration beginning on Monday.

Shumard, 43, is a 1972 graduate of Long Beach State. Shumard resigned after a troubled three-year tenure at Fullerton marked by unrest among student-athletes, the termination of the football program and a losing court battle in a wrongful termination suit brought by fired volleyball coach Jim Huffman.

“I’m excited, and I think it’s going to be a real good fit for me,” Shumard said. “It will get me back doing some things I really enjoy. I didn’t want to move, and I’ll be working for and with good people again.”

Shumard will oversee the marketing, promotions and ticket operations in addition to assisting the athletic director with the daily operation of the department, said Dave O’Brien, Long Beach State athletic director.
