State track and field champions Jeremy Fischer of Camarillo High and Dolores Tuimoloau of Channel Islands will compete against some of the nation’s best in the Golden West Invitational at American River College today in Sacramento.

Fischer, the national outdoor leader in the high jump at 7 feet 4 inches, is one of seven entrants to have cleared 7 feet this season.

Sophomore Kevin Dotson (7-2 1/4 of Los Alamos, N.M., senior Shannon King (7-1 1/2) of Waukegan, Ill., and junior Bobby Williams (7-1 1/4) of Great Bend, Kan., head the list of challengers.

Tuimoloau, the state leader in the shot-put with a personal best of 49-2, was eagerly awaiting a meeting with national leader Collinus Newsome (52-1 3/4) of Denver South High, but Newsome is not entered in the Golden West meet.

In her absence, senior Rebecca Ball (46-2 1/4) of Dansburg, Ohio, and sophomore Sua Seilala (45-7 1/4) of St. Thomas Aquinas of Florida are expected to give Tuimoloau her stiffest competition.

Jason Medearis of Hart, Antonio Arce of Palmdale, Jamaal Chase of Quartz Hill and Cathy Prater of Agoura also are entered in the meet.

Medearis, who placed second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and fourth in the 110 highs in last week’s state championships, will try to improve upon his personal bests of 36.80 seconds and 14.12 in those events.

Arce, the runner-up in the state meet in the 3,200 with a time of 9 minutes 3.19 seconds, is gunning for his fourth personal best in as many meets.

Chase bounded a personal best of 49-11 in the triple jump to finish second in the state meet and hopes to crack the 50-foot barrier today.
