THE TIMES 1994 ALL-COUNTY BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

GARY YOUNG Event: 100 Meters, 200 Meters School/Year: Woodbridge, Sr. State-meet qualifier and county leader in both events. Ran a 10.52 wind-aided over 100 meters and a 21.39 over 200.

JIMMY HUTSELL Event: 400 Meters School/Year: Cypress, Sr. Seemed to run faster as the season progressed, winning the Empire League title and earning a spot in the Masters meet. Had a season-best time of 48.68 seconds.

BRIAN O’BANNON Event: 800 Meters School/Year: Ocean View, So. Emerged out of nowhere to post the county’s fastest time and a sixth-place finish at the Masters meet. Ran a 1:54.21 in his first year of track and field competition.

JAIME MARTINEZ Event: 1,600 Meters, 3,200 Meters School/Year: Orange, Sr. Undefeated county champion at both distances, he reached the Masters meet in both and the State finals in the 3,200.

TONY GARCIA Event: 110 High Hurdles School/Year: Foothill, Sr. Century League and county champion this spring. Ran a personal-best 14.74 for the Knights to win all-county honors for the second consecutive year.

MEL LETE Event: 300 Intermediate Hurdles School/Year: Saddleback, Sr. Sixth-place finisher at the State meet. Ran 37.62 for fourth place in the Masters meet after winning the Orange County and Sea View League titles.

JOHN BAIN Event: Pole Vault School/Year: Foothill, Sr. The most consistent vaulter in the area won the Century League and county championships. Won the section Division II title and advanced to the State meet.

JASON BOYCE Event: Long Jump School/Year: Corona del Mar, Sr. Soccer standout capped his first full track season by qualifying for State meet. Won the Sea View title and jumped a best of 22-9 1/4 wind-aided this spring.

TROY LANGLEY Event: High Jump School/Year: Canyon, Sr. Burst onto the scene with a 6-10 1/4 jump in a dual meet against league-rival Foothill. Won Century League and county titles at 6-6 and advanced to the state meet.

REGGIE CURRY Event: Triple Jump School/Year: Tustin, Jr. Posted one of the nation’s finest jumps (49-8 1/2 wind-aided) to win the county championship. Won the second Division II and Seaview titles as well.

VICTOR TIBORCZSZEGHY (Jr.), DAHRIN FOOTMAN (Jr.), ANTON HECTOR (Jr.), KAREEM CLARK (Jr.) Event: 400 Relay School: Esperanza County runners-up got hot at season’s end. Won the Empire League, then finished second in the section Division II final (42.33). Top mark of 42.33. Advanced to Masters meet.

MIKE BOYES (Jr.), DAN FOOTE (Jr.), DON OLIVER (Sr.), ETHAN TAUB (Sr.) Event: 1,600 Relay School/Year: Foothill The Knights kept their stronghold on the event, winning the county and Century League titles. Finished seventh at the State meet, running 3:15.79 in the preliminaries.

WADE TIFT Event: Shotput School/Year: Newport Harbor, Sr. Second at State meet, no county thrower came within two feet of him. Launched the State’s farthest throw of 61-6. Won county, Sea View League and Masters’ titles.

STEVE GONZALES Event: Discus School/Year: Newport Harbor, Sr. State meet participant won the county championship in April and Sea View League title in May. Threw a best of 177-9 for the season. Third at section Division II finals.

Name: Jason Boyce Event: 100 Meters School/Year: Corona del Mar, Sr. Time: 10.90. Masters meet qualifier, second in the Sea View League.

Name: Jeff Williams Event: 200 Meters School/Year: Orange, Sr. Time: 21.84. Century League champion, advanced to the Masters meet.

Name: Matt Lete Event: 400 Meters School/Year: Saddleback, Sr. Time: 48.78. Masters meet qualfier, Sea View League champion.

Name: Ethan Taub Event: 800 Meters School/Year: Foothill, Sr. Time: 1:54.8. Orange County and Century League champion.

Name: Phil Sitner Event: 1,600 Meters School/Year: Villa Park, Sr. Time: 4:20.65. Century League runner-up advanced to Masters meet.

Name: Adalberto Sanchez Event: 3,200 Meters School/Year: Capistrano Valley, Jr. Time: 9:13.48. Sixth at Masters meet, won the South Coast League title.

Name: Steve Mercuri Event: 110 High Hurdles School/Year: Irvine, Sr. Time: 15.01w. Won the Sea View League title.

Name: Anton Hector Event: 300 Intermediate Hurdles School/Year: Esperanza, Jr. Time: 38.37. Empire League champion and Southern Section Division II finalist.

Event: 400 Relay School: Woodbridge Time: 42.54. Eddie Yoshida (Sr.), Mark Backoff (Sr.), Jimmy Matsushima (Sr.), Gary Young (Sr.). Sea View League champions, county runners-up.

Event: 1,600 Relay School: Saddleback Time: 3:23.45. Carlos Sanchez (Sr.), Mel Lete (Sr.), Julio Cordero (Sr.), Matt Lete (Sr.). Sea View League champions, advanced to Southern Section Division II finals.

Name: Cory Johnson Event: High Jump School/Year: Los Alamitos, So. Height: 6-8 1/2. Empire League champion.

Name: Kareem Clark Event: Long Jump School/Year: Esperanza, Jr. Length: 21-11 1/2. Empire League and Orange County champion.

Name: David Shaw Event: Triple Jump School/Year: Ocean View, Sr. Length: 45-11 1/2. Seventh at Masters meet, won Sunset League title.

Name: Steve Michaels Event: Pole Vault School/Year: Brethren Christian, So. Height: 14-6. Tied for the county’s best mark this season.

Name: Steve Gonzales Event: Shotput School/Year: Newport Harbor, Sr. Distance: 58-1. Second place in Sea View League with one of best efforts in state.

Name: Jeff Bodholdt Event: Discus School/Year: Irvine, Sr. Distance: 170-11. Advanced to the State finals, finishing ninth.
