Fred Newhart Elementary School was singled out recently as one of 30 California finalists for the 1993-94 National Blue Ribbons School Program.

“This is a testament to the kind of quality education that goes on every day at Newhart School,” said Capistrano Unified School District spokesperson Jackie Price. “It’s also a tribute to the students, their family and the community that supports the school.”

Nationwide, 529 public and private schools were nominated for the honors. Schools were chosen for their student achievements, academic record, parent and community support and curriculum.

Each school was visited by a federal review team member to substantiate information on their application for the program.

“These schools exemplify some of the most successful programs in the California educational system,” said Acting State Supt. of Public Instruction William D. Dawson. “They deserve congratulations from the people of California for their achievements.”

In addition to doing well on state aptitude tests, Newhart School was rated highly for its curriculum. The school also participates in an intergenerational exchange program called “Kids and Seniors Together” with the neighboring city senior center.
