A man who fled after trading shots with an officer answering a 911 call at a residence here early Sunday surrendered later, authorities said. No one was injured in the exchange.

Howard Eakin, 25, whose hometown was not immediately known, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after fleeing from a residence about 2 a.m. at the 100 block of West Avenida Cordoba, said Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Joseph Davis.

“When the first officer arrived,” Davis said, “the suspect was in a front yard and started shooting at the deputy.”

As the suspect repeatedly fired a handgun, Davis said, and the officer returned fire. However, neither the officer nor Eakin was hit, he said.

Deputies had responded to a call from a woman who dialed 911 and said a man with a gun was at her residence.

After the brief gunfight, the suspect ran into the residence and fled through a rear door, Davis said. Eakin threw away the gun and hopped over a rear fence, prompting a “major search” of the neighborhood, Davis said.

Eakin later turned himself in, Davis said.

He was taken to Orange County Jail.
