SANTA CLARITA — A Saugus man died when he lost control of his pickup truck, which overturned on a two-lane road, striking a second car whose driver had to be hospitalized, a California Highway Patrol official said Monday.
Donald Ellis, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 4:15 p.m. Sunday on Vasquez Canyon Road about one mile east of Bouquet Canyon Road, said Officer Wendy Moore. She said Ellis was driving a 1987 Ford Ranger westbound at an unknown speed when his truck drifted onto the right dirt shoulder.
“He over-corrected and steered back into the westbound lane, and then into the eastbound lane,” she added. “(Ellis) then swerved to the right, causing (it) to overturn.”
The top portion of the truck’s cab struck the front hood of an eastbound 1993 Toyota Corolla driven by Charles Ferguson, 43, of Saugus, Moore said. Ferguson was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia with moderate injuries.
