LOS ANGELES : Portion of State’s Largest Freeway Interchange Opens

Half of California’s largest freeway interchange opened Wednesday, linking the new Interstate 105 with heavily traveled Interstate 405.

Workers removed orange cones on the roadway before 6 a.m., providing morning commuters with a way to travel from the southbound 405, or San Diego Freeway, to the westbound 105, or Century Freeway.

The interchange is one of the final projects associated with construction of the 105 Freeway, which opened in October, said Caltrans spokeswoman Margie Tiritilli.

The interchange, which covers more than 100 acres and is taller than a seven-story building, is east of Los Angeles International Airport.

“It is the largest and most complex freeway interchange ever built in California,” said Caltrans spokesman Rick Holland.

The connector roads from the eastbound 105 to the 405 are expected to open next month, he said.
