A 17-year-old Thousand Oaks youth accidentally shot himself in the chest on Friday when the gun in his pants went off, authorities said.

The teen-ager was in satisfactory condition Friday at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, authorities said. His name is being withheld because of his age.

The boy went to visit a friend in the 200 block of Teasdale Street in Thousand Oaks about 2:30 p.m., Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Nagel said.

When he discovered his friend was not home, the youth sat near the house to wait for him, Nagel said. While he was there, the .38-caliber revolver the teen-ager was carrying in his pants accidentally fired and hit him in the chest, Nagel said. The bullet was lodged in his right shoulder.

When the youth is out of the hospital, Nagel said, deputies will arrest the teen-ager on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon.
