Jet Makes Low Pass Over Santa Ana
The pilot of a Southwest Airlines jetliner on approach to John Wayne Airport late Sunday “lost sight” of the airport when he flew low over south Santa Ana, then boosted the jets when instructed by tower officials to climb higher.
Larry Berg, Federal Aviation Administration duty officer in Los Angeles who contacted John Wayne tower, said the Southwest jet was then ordered to go around for another approach about 10:20 p.m.
“A Southwest airliner jet was making a visual approach into John Wayne,” Berg said, “and he lost sight of the airport. The tower immediately ordered him to climb, and he started climbing (rapidly) and headed west.”
The airplane later landed safely at John Wayne Airport. The FAA did not know where the flight had originated.
A spokesperson for the airlines could not be reached late Sunday.
