NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Bishop Amat Sophomore Leads List of Baseball, Softball Honorees

Several San Gabriel Valley high school athletes were selected by Cal-Hi Sports for statewide recognition in baseball and softball.

Bishop Amat pitcher Eric Valenzuela was chosen sophomore pitcher of the year by the publication, which also tabbed as its upset of the year Los Altos’ 3-2 victory over Bishop Amat in the second round of the Division III playoffs.

Pete Paciorek of San Marino was selected player of the year for Division III schools. Josh Oder of San Marino and Justin Dospital of Gladstone were selected to the team as well.

Jon Crabb of Maranatha was selected to the all-state team for Division IV and V schools.

Valenzuela, John Salter of Damien, Aryn Hart of Alhambra, Steve Medrano of Bishop Amat and Brian Llibre of West Covina were selected to the all-underclassmen team.

San Dimas pitcher Brandi Isgar was one of 30 softball players from all divisions selected to the all-state team.

Isgar was also chosen to the Division III all-state team that included La Canada’s Lindsay Parker and Jackie Tenerelli.

Parker and Chrissy Gil of Bishop Amat were selected to the all-underclassmen team, and Chelsea Thoke of Pasadena Poly was selected to the all-state team for Division IV and V schools.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s athletic teams helped the school tie Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.’s all-sports trophy.

The award is based on the overall success of the program.

Pomona won the tennis title, tied for first place in basketball and finished third or higher in all other sports. San Luis Obispo won cross-country and soccer championships, tied for first in softball and finished second in tennis and track and field.

Registration has begun for the 33rd annual Glendora Tennis Championships, which will begin July 23.

The tournament is open to players of all ages and ability levels. All finalists receive trophies and awards and $3,000 will be awarded in prize money.

The Arcadia Recreation Department has begun registration for a men’s slo-pitch softball league that will begin play July 26.

Games are played Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Bonita Park.
