LONG BEACH : Hearing Set for Suspects in Slayings of 2 Students

A Superior Court judge Thursday set a preliminary hearing for July 11 on charges against two suspects in connection with the killings of two Marymount College students in March during a carjacking in San Pedro.

Raymond Oscar Butler, 18, and Alberto Vasquez Reygoza, 20, appeared briefly before Judge James L. Wright in Long Beach Superior Court on Thursday to set a date for the hearing and to hear their lawyers request jailhouse telephone privileges for them. Wilson ordered jail supervisors to allow each defendant one daily telephone call.

Butler, who is accused of shooting Takuma Ito and Go Matsuura, both 19, on March 22 in a crime that brought protests from Japan about lawlessness in Los Angeles, is being held without bail. Ito was a native of Japan, and Matsuura was American-born of Japanese parents.

Reygoza is charged with being an accessory and with receiving stolen property in connection with the case. Bail was initially set for Reygoza at $45,000, but he was held without bail after it was determined that he was in violation of the terms of probation from a prior case.
