AGOURA HILLS : City Puts Off Vote on Utilities Tax

Share

The Agoura Hills City Council has postponed final approval of a controversial tax on the use of utilities to clear up technical language in the ordinance.

By a unanimous vote Wednesday, the council reaffirmed its approval earlier this month of a tax on the use of electricity, gas and telephone service and added to the measure “definitions of residential and commercial” users, said City Manager Terry Matz.

If the ordinance is given final approval next Wednesday, residents will pay a 4% tax on utilities, and business owners, a 3.5% levy.

Revenue expected from the proposed tax has been figured into the proposed 1994-95 budget, which includes $270,000 in spending cuts and layoffs of four part-time and two full-time workers to help offset an estimated $1-million revenue shortfall.

At its regular Wednesday night meeting, the council also approved the layoff of a part-time employee responsible for citing such code violations as abandoning cars or improperly storing items on property visible to others.

This layoff, with those included in the budget, would leave the city with 16 full-time employees.

The budget is scheduled for approval July 13.
